Origins of Broadbeach

The South Coast area was the country of the Kombumerri people, a kinship group attached to the Yugambeh language tribal group who utilised the river systems of the Logan, Albert, Coomera, Nerang rivers and all the adjacent creeks and streams.

Broadbeach was used as a feasting area by the local groups, as the discovery of middens would suggest.

Modern Broadbeach

Just prior to World War II, extensive sand mining was  conducted in the Gold Coast area.  In 1942 Southport Minerals (later Associated Minerals Pty Ltd) commenced mining the beach and dunes at Broadbeach.  After mining, the dunes were reconstructed and revegetated.  Today there is no visible evidence of mining.

Early days of Broadbeach State School

Broadbeach State School opened 16 May 1960.  On the first day 70 students - 37 boys and 33 girls - were admitted to the school.  The school was officially opened 26 November 1960 by the then Minister for Education, Hon. Jack Pizzey MLA.
